GV-22 Midrange “honk”
#1
Finally got some time to really crank up my GV-22 for the first time in a few years, and wanted to get some input from you all on the tone.

Basically no matter where I set the Treble/Bass controls, I seem to get a pronounced midrange “honk” in the tone, not dissimilar to a cocked wah type sound. As my band mate put it, “sounds like the amp has a cold”. In fact I’d call it very similar to the V-series amps if you were to click the midrange switch all the way to the right and push the know past half way (I also own a V2).

Wondering if this is the expected tone of this amp? My understanding is that this amp is basically just a repack of the 60s design, and I’ve never experienced this behavior with my RR2 or any other Geminis I’ve played.

Wondering where I should start here… speakers? Preamp tubes?

Haven’t cracked the amp open yet, but it appears to be mostly original aside from the 7199 being replaced by a 6GH8A and adaptor. Should I look into switching this out first?

Thanks in advance!
